L'enfance du Christ
Hector Berlioz

Venture outside the traditional holiday fare with Berlioz’s endearing, tender story of the Holy Family's journey from Herod’s wrath to safety in Egypt.

This rarely-performed treasure from the master of orchestration is brought to life by our dream team of soloists:

The York University Dance Ensemble perform choreography by Carol Anderson, Associate Professor in the Department of Dance, School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design.

"The energy and grace of these young dancers give us a fresh approach to this 19-century masterpiece. They bring the story to life. – the story of a refugee family fleeing violence – which is strikingly current and poignantly in our minds this year " Stephanie Martin

About L'enfance du Christ

" Berlioz treats us to a great range of emotion and expression, texture and colour.  His orchestration moves from delicate, to ecstatic to transcendental. I want to bring out the colour of the orchestration and the expressive choral music.

Berlioz is a musical giant we study and listen to in music history class - but to perform his work live is really exciting. What first attracted me was the psychological examination of Herod - through his dream we see not just a murderous monster, but a terrified man haunted by a paranoid fear of losing power. You will not find the commercialized, idealized Christmas story here. Berlioz's post-nativity story is dreadful, full of danger, magic and exoticism.

The York University dancers will add a visual element that the music cries out for. This will be Carol Anderson's farewell project with the York Dance Ensemble. I am honoured to be working with my distinguished colleague and these energtic and dedicated young dancers."
Artistic Director Stephanie Martin
